What is Forest School?

Forest School is a child-centred outdoor education delivery model. Keiki visit natural spaces to grow, gain confidence, and learn personal, social and technical skills.

"Time in nature is not leisure time; it's an essential investment in our children's health (and also, by the way, in our own)."
- Richard Louv

What is a "Forest school"?

A forest school uses the surrounding natural spaces as a means to build independence and self-esteem and empower children in the natural environment through hands-on play.  Forest school is not only a way of connecting children with nature (during a time when the disconnect is so great) but a way of fostering a more independent, child-led way of learning through play and wonder. The main goal is to encourage curiosity and exploration with all of the senses while encouraging spatial awareness along with motor skills. Children are encouraged to explore, question and observe, which can inspire creativity and lead to new ideas and solutions.

The forest school educational model first developed in Denmark in the 1950s, and has since caught on all over Europe, in the US, and in Asia, where some see it as a way of connecting children with nature and fostering a more independent, child-led way of learning.

Educational research shows that learning in a forest school

- Improves confidence

- Improves resilience

- Improves physical well-being

- Improves empathy

- Encourages open-ended exploration

- Improves problem-solving skills

- Gives an insight into the natural world

- Improves Physical Well-being & Motor Development

Play is an incredibly powerful tool in a child's development. It is foundational to a child's well-being and should be seen as a necessity. With Forest School Oahu your keiki will visit natural spaces to play, and learn personal, social and technical skills. We focus on immersing kids into nature, playing and socializing while learning doing arts, and crafts and exploring the natural world.

Our own personal experience of forest school is one of adventure that isn't just for children but for parents and caregivers as well. We offer a unique experience to bond with your keiki while socializing with other like-minded adults and forging some new friendships along the way!

A typical Forest School Oahu Session

In our Nature Club program, we’ll be looking for wildlife, bug hunting, listening for birds and looking for signs of the animals we share our spaces with.

Our sessions are informal and are all about the children leading their exploration, which is how we believe children learn best. We have weekly themes and link these in with a craft and a story, providing them with spotting/nature ID sheets, binoculars and magnifying glasses so they can get up close to the natural world, and help support their natural curiosity. However, if they want to just dig or splash that's fine too! It is, after all, an important way to learn about the world around them.

The only thing missing in the forest now is YOU!

Wander through the wild with us as we learn through play, connect to the natural world and cultivate real life skills in a safe and supportive space.

What to Bring:

We run in all weather, as long as it’s safe to, so please make sure both you and your child are dressed appropriately for the weather.  We recommend coming prepared with sunscreen, bug spray, and a change of clothes for everyone. We also recommend close-toed shoes, especially for exploration in the woods.
Rain boots are perfect for rainy play and rain suits or waterproof trousers are worth investing in as it means the children can enjoy their time in the rain!

"Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood."
